The Hanley Castle off-road riding route has been extended to include a stretch along the banks of the river Severn. The route enables local riders to avoid the hazards of busy roads by giving them access to more than 10 miles of off-road riding over open pastureland, arable fields, woodland trails, riverbank, quiet lanes and tracks, much of it around the Severn End estate. There are plenty of long canter stretches as well as wonderful views across to the Malvern Hills and surrounding countryside.
The idea was proposed by Chrissie Bacon, who was a member of a toll-riding scheme in Ombersley. “I think it’s the only way forward for riders, as you can’t really relax and enjoy it when you’re riding on the road,” she said. The scheme is part of TROT (Toll Rides Off-road Trust), which originated in 1990. Worcestershire is the fifth county to join the organisation and already has six networks established. Members are identified by a fluorescent hatband and carry a card.
The countryside code of conduct is: take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints (or hoof prints) and kill nothing but time.
